This condition has gained popularity since we started using masks in our daily lives after the COVID-19 outbreak and has even been given a name: “maskne” (mask acne). Maskne not only causes skin rashes but also redness, swelling, irritation, itching and can even worsen other conditions such as acne, rosacea, contact dermatitis, folliculitis, among others.
Why does it happen?
As maskne can involve a number of skin conditions, the exact cause of the symptoms can vary, but in most cases, maskne is the result of clogged pores. If you already have oily skin and a poorly established skincare routine, then your pores are more likely to become blocked. It’s also important to understand that maskne traps moisture through breathing and sweating, which can greatly increase the risk of acne.
The friction of the mask can also sensitize the skin because it is in contact with it for too long and can cause irritation, either due to friction or even an allergy to the material of the mask. Some masks are pre-treated with chemicals or are simply rough, so we recommend that you always use a reusable mask and wash it with a non-perfumed detergent to avoid potential allergies.
How to treat in 3 steps:
First: wash your face in the morning and at night with lukewarm water and a product suitable for your skin type (suggestions such as aloe vera, tea tree and lavender soap or even stinging nettle are great). If you sweat in the middle of the day, just rinse your face with water so as not to remove excess natural oil from your skin (your body can overproduce it if you wash too often). Exfoliate only once a week.
Second: if possible, do not wear makeup under the mask. Take advantage of the fact that the area is covered to recover as quickly as possible. If you really need to wear it, then try to minimize the impact by using good quality products and using as few products as possible.
Third : we will moisturize with a regenerating and sebum-regulating oil to enhance the recovery and vitality of your skin. You will only need two ingredients:
-
ROSEHIP VEGETABLE OIL
- It is a natural preservative, rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega 3 and 6).
- Relieves inflammation and acts as a moisturizer.
- Helps treat dry, irritated and worn skin.
- Good for treating burn marks, scars and stretch marks.
- It has an acceptable level of penetration into the skin, but may leave a sticky feeling if used on clean skin.
- Does not go rancid easily: lasts between 6 months and 1 year if stored in a suitable place (cool, out of sunlight).
Once opened, it should be placed in the refrigerator.
-
AN ESSENTIAL OIL: TEA TREE OR CYPRESS
