Indicated for liver/spleen disharmony with internal heat, malnutrition of the heart spirit and possible dampness-phlegm. When the liver becomes excessive, it typically attacks the spleen horizontally, making it weak and deficient. Since the heart spirit is nourished by the qi and blood transformed and generated by the spleen, this can lead to malnutrition of the spirit and consequently to states of restlessness and agitation. Because the spleen is the root of phlegm production, a deficiency of the spleen can also give rise to dampness-phlegm which can obstruct the orifices of the heart and also cause states of restlessness and agitation.

Chai Hu regulates the liver and resolves stagnation, while Dang Gui nourishes the blood and harmonizes the liver. Bai Zhu and Fu Ling strengthen the spleen and tonify the qi.
