Chai Hu, Jin Yin Hua, Lian Qiao and Niu Bang Zi clarify heat and expel wind, while Jin Yin Hua, Lian Qiao, Xuan Shen, Sheng Di and Ban Lan Gen clarify heat and eliminate toxins.
Among these ingredients with the function of clearing heat, Xuan Shen, Niu Bang Zi and Ban Lan Gen have the empirical function of clearing the throat. Huang Qin clears any internal heat in the lungs, liver and stomach, which may exacerbate some external heat. Chai Hu also drains the liver, in keeping with the fact that in children “the liver usually has a surplus.” Dang Shen, Ban Xia, Da Zao, Gan Cao, and Sheng Jiang strengthen the spleen, while transforming phlegm and eliminating the dampness that settles as phlegm. Jie Geng also transforms phlegm and together with Chuan Xiong, directs the other ingredients to the upper body, including the chest and neck area.
Because blood is the mother of qi, the addition of Dang Gui and Bai Shao helps in the production of qi, while regulating the liver and harmonizing the defensive and nutritive.
